The Promise
In 2008, Jimmy Lakey adopted his son River from an orphanage in the Gikondo District near Kigali, Rwanda, making a profound promise to help the other children he met there. After River’s earliest friends were placed in adoptive homes and the orphanage closed, Jimmy expanded his commitment to support children in Rwanda through River’s Promise.
Today, River’s Promise is a registered non-profit dedicated to breaking the cycle of extreme poverty by providing education and essential support to hundreds of children and widows in Rwanda.
In 2023, they launched the first phase of Legacy Christian Academy, a school currently serving kindergarten through 4th grade. The organization focuses on child sponsorship, offering critical support including school tuition, uniforms, meals, medical care, and educational programs.
Jimmy Lakey’s personal mission has grown into a transformative movement, ensuring that children in Rwanda have access to education and opportunities to build a better future. Through River’s Promise, he continues to honor the promise he made to his son, supporting some of the poorest children in Rwanda and providing them with hope and a path to success.
